Características fisico-químicas de los sedimentos del Golfo San Jorge y su relación con los organismos bentónicos OceanDocs
Fernández, M..
This is a study on surficial sediments and bottom water physico-chemical characteristics of the San Jorge Gulf (SW Atlantic, Argentina)during spring 1999 - winter 2000 (first studied period), autumn 2001- summer 2002 (second studied period)and winter 2003 (third studied period), based on samples obtained during research cruises carried out on board of the INIDEP (Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero)research vessels. Environmental variables such as temperature, salinity, density, oxygen and bottom water chlorophyll a content as well as granulometric fractions, total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, chlorophyll a and phaeopigments in sediment concentration and depth were analyzed. The origen and...

Ecosystemes benthiques profonds et chimiosynthese bacterienne: Sources hydrothermales et suintements ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien.
Hydrothermal communities of various species compositions have been described from the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic. Brine and cold seeps and hydrocarbon seepages have been found off Florida, off the Oregon and Japanese subduction systems, on the Laurentian Fan, near Barbados, and off Louisiana. Biomasses range from 10 to 70 kg/m super(2), fresh weight. Basic microdistribution of species groups in aureoles centered around hydrothermal vents reveals different levels of adaptation to harsh physico-chemical conditions. Two groups of primary producers can be recognized: a highly efficient cool water group with large vestimentiferan tube worms and bivalves, and alvinellid polychaetes adapted to hot waters. Both groups are exploited by specific...

Southern elephant seals from Kerguelen Islands confronted by Antarctic Sea ice. Changes in movements and in diving behaviour ArchiMer
Bailleul, Frédéric; Charrassin, Jean-benoit; Ezraty, Robert; Ardhuin, Fanny; Mcmahon, Clive R.; Field, Iain C.; Guinet, Christophe.
The behaviour of southern elephant seals from Kerguelen Island (4950′S, 7030′E) was investigated in relation to the oceanographic regions of the Southern Ocean. The oceanographic and the seal behaviour data, including location and diving activity, were collected using a new generation of satellite-relayed devices measuring and transmitting pressure, temperature, and salinity along with locations. Dive duration, maximum diving depth, time spent at the bottom of the dives, and shape of dive profiles were compared between male and female seals, and were related to the oceanographic characteristics of areas prospected by the seals. Most animals travelled to the Antarctic shelf. However, during winter, adult females travelled away from the...

Spatial and temporal characterization of soft bottom polychaetes in a shallow tropical bay (colombian Caribbean) OceanDocs
Guzmán-Alvis, A.I.; Lattig, P.; Ruíz, J.A..
The spatial and temporal variations of the polychaete assemblages were studied within and off a shallow (10-25 m) tropical bay (Bahía de Portete). The polychaete abundances at family level and their trophic mechanisms were used for this purpose. Sediment samples were collected at six stations in this bay during the wet and dry seasons. Multivariate analysis indicated that off- Bay polychaete assemblages were different from the bay ones; this spatial variation was related to sedimentary characteristics, depth and turbid-water conditions. On the other hand, these assemblages did not show significant differences between the dry and wet seasons. The differences between these two assemblages were given specially by the Syllidae, Gonidadidae, Nephtyidae,...
